Charity News

With Christmas coming up, many families will be considering pets as a family gift at Christmas time.

Experience has taught us though that the giving of pets as a Christmas gift is one of the largest contributing factors to the volume of unwanted pets shortly after the holiday period, as the families face the reality of owning their pet and decide it's not right for them.

We believe part of the reason is the ""gift"" process - particularly for children. Remember in particular that pets are not suitable for children: no child should be given the full responsibility for their pet, but should be supervised at all times, with the adult taking the full responsibility for the pet. However, receiving a pet amongst all their other gifts at Christmas creates the wrong level of emotional attachment, with the pet being likened to the toys and other ""disposable"" gifts that don't need constant care & attention.

For this reason, we do not support the giving of rabbits at Christmas time, and we will not be able to accept adoption requests for any of our rabbits between Monday 17th December 2012 and Monday 7th January 2013, although we will be happy to accept enquiries and home check appointments to reserve rabbits for rehoming on either side of these dates.

Our Christmas Adoption Pack

We do however appreciate that some families will still be able to adopt a rabbit at this time of year and be able to provide an excellent long-term home for their new pet. Considering the expense involved in setting up the right environment for your new pet we also appreciate many will like the ""excuse"" Christmas brings for spending all the necessary money on the hutch, run and equipment that will be required for adopting rabbits.

As an alternative, we are providing a ""Christmas Adoption Pack"", which allows you to include the adoption of your new pet within your Christmas experience, whilst disassociating the rabbit(s) themselves from the festivities of Christmas day. Our pack helps strengthen the message that rabbits are a lifelong commitment, and take a lot of care.

Included within our Pack:

  • Rabbit hand-puppet which can be given as a gift on Christmas Day (additional toys can be purchased - ask for details)
  • An Adoption Certificate featuring your chosen rabbit(s), which can be given as a gift on Christmas Day
  • ""For The Love Of Parsley"" book, containing rabbit behaviour advice & tips
  • RWAF Hop-To-It information booklet, with additional rabbit welfare & care advice.
  • Your chosen rabbit(s) reserved until an agreed date in January (no earlier than 7th January 2013).

  • Single Rabbit, Fully Vaccinated & Neutered (to be adopted as a bunny buddy for an existing family rabbit). Minimum Donation of £60
  • Pair of Rabbits, fully vaccinated, neutered & bonded. Minimum Donation of £100
  • Understanding Cost & Minimum Donations

All other aspects of our adoption process continue to apply. A home check must be completed initially to qualify for our Christmas Adoption Pack. Donations must be made in advance of adoption in order to receive the pack in time for Christmas. (Understanding Cost & Minimum Donations).

This Christmas period, we're asking you to help us if you can. A one-off donation, no matter how small, can make all the difference!

Fairly Beloved Rabbit Care currently have approximately 25 rabbits that recently entered the rescue service (bringing our total number of current residents to over 60). Each of these rabbits need immediate vaccinations, and need to be neutered before they can be adopted.

There has also been a sudden increase of requests for rescue, and our waiting list of rabbits to enter the service grows daily.

It is traditionally a very difficult time of year for us to gain support, as many people forget about our ""Spring-time"" friends at Christmas.

FBRC is very low on available funds, and simply cannot afford the treatment the new residents require over and above the ongoing requirements of those rabbits already being cared for within the foster network.

We want to be able to do more.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - We raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

So please dig deep and donate now.

The Vodafone Foundation World of Difference UK programme gives 500 people the chance to work for their dream charity, and get paid. Over the years they’ve helped hundreds of people donate their skills and experience to the charities of their choice.

For successful applicants the Vodafone Foundation will provide their chosen charity with £2500, with the winner receiving the balance as a salary after NI and tax have been paid. Placements can be full-time for two months or part-time for four months (minimum 15 hours a week).

Obviously for a charity as small as we are, our funds just don’t allow for any paid members of staff at all, and we are solely reliant on volunteers to run the entire service. David & Feona, our charity directors, also run all aspects of the charity in their spare time, trying to fit everything around full-time employment & family life. As such, some of our big ideas have not yet left the ground as finding time to complete these special one-off projects is near-on-impossible.

The World of Difference programme therefore presents an interesting opportunity, and we would be keen to speak to anyone who thinks they could commit their time to developing & implementing a special project for the charity.

If you’ve got the passion and drive to make a real difference to our work, and further improvement in local rabbit welfare, why not get involved?

The process is simple:

  1. Discuss ideas for a project with us (call us on 0141 280 3272 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to arrange a time to discuss it). Bring us your ideas, or ask us for some suggestions. We’ll chat about how we could best use your skills, manage the project, timings etc, and plan out everything you need to know in advance of making an application.
  2. Once we’ve an idea of what you’d be able to do, make your application to the Vodafone World of Difference programme. You need to make the application, but we will offer support where it is relevant to do so. The application deadline is 13th November 2012.
  3. The Vodafone Foundation will review applications and select 500 placements. Successful applicants will be notified after 14th January 2013.
  4. If you are lucky enough to be selected, you must start your placement between 1st March and 29 March 2013.

Please note that funding for these projects is limited to successful Vodafone Foundation World of Difference applicants only, and we will not be able to honour any funding placements if applicants are unsuccessful. It may still be possible for projects to continue unfunded dependent on circumstances.

Help us make our November eBay Big Auction a success! 19th - 27th November 2012.

On the lead up to Christmas, there's not better time to clear out all your unwanted things and you can do it all whilst raising money for Fairly Beloved Rabbit Care.

Using eBay for Charity, you can list your unwanted items on eBay and opt to have some, or all of your profits from the sale of your items donated directly to the charity and the buyers can opt to Gift Aid donations to us too! Every time you list an item for Fairly Beloved Rabbit Care, you’ll get a fee credit on your basic insertion and final value fees equal to the percentage you donate. So if you donate 50% of your selling price to us, eBay will waive 50% of your fees. Why not donate 100% of your selling price, and have no fees?!?

We want as many people as possible to sell their items during the week of 19th - 27th November 2012, and as the month progresses we will promote our eBay Big Auction to encourage as many people to log on and buy too.

You can sell anything and everything on eBay - new or used. And it's a lot of fun.

So start gathering up your items for sale, and get ready to join in the auction fun!

You can now play our Binky Hunt scavenger hunt, an excellent family fun activity, for free JUST FOR FUN!

Unfortunately, due to a significant lack of participants, we do not feel it would be viable to run Binky Hunt as a competition. We are therefore withdrawing the competition. We still have the prize available and will consider an alternative fundraiser competition in the near future.

Registration fees for the few people who did register have now been refunded.

However, we still think that Binky Hunt could be an excellent piece of family fun, so have decided to publish the game for you to play, at any time.

Visit to download the fun games rules & scavenger list you need to play.

And have fun!
